A-G Requirements

The A-G requirements are a set of high school courses that students in California must complete to be eligible for admission to the state's public universities, specifically the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems. These requirements are designed to ensure that students have a strong academic foundation across a variety of core subjects, preparing them for the rigors of college-level work. They're called "A-G" because they cover seven subject areas: History/Social Science (A), English (B), Mathematics (C), Laboratory Science (D), Language other than English (E), Visual and Performing Arts (F), and College-Preparatory Elective (G).

To meet these requirements, students must pass each course with a grade of C or better. The number of years required for each subject varies. While the A-G list provides a standardized framework, the specific courses that qualify at a student's high school must be approved by the UC system. These requirements are a critical component of the college application process for California students, as they demonstrate a student's commitment to a well-rounded and challenging curriculum.
